The Icefields Parkway is one of Alberta's most scenic drives, running north to south through Jasper National Park. The road is 140 miles (230 km) long, with a speed limit of 55 miles/h (90 km/h) and even 30 miles/h (50 km/h) on some sections, it will take you at least 3 hours to get from Lake Louise to Banff. Icefields Parkway is a real pleasure for the eyes. At each turn and after each climb, the landscape changes, the mountain is revealed from new angles and the immensity of the Rockies hits us head on. We feel small in front of this nature, which seems so powerful. Whether it is along the plains, on the edge of the glaciers, on the banks of the mountain lakes or the Athabaska River, the Icefields Parkway offers the most beautiful views of the region. There are a few stops along the way to visit some famous sites. Bow Lake is a beautiful mountain lake that is very accessible and can be viewed from the nearby parking lot. There are also hikes available if you want to discover more. Sunwapta Falls is a waterfall with a small island that seems to defy the current, while the Rockies stand in the background. Columbia Icefields is a huge ice field and covers an area of 125 square miles, (325 square kilometers). This configuration and the huge glacier create a microclimate, so remember to dress warmly if you plan to visit. A short hike of almost 1 mile (1.4 km) is available and allows you to get as close as possible to the glacier. This road offers incredible landscapes for more than three hours non-stop. However, do not hesitate to stop and contemplate its landscapes more closely. Be careful, there is only one gas station available on this road, so it is important to have your car filled up before leaving. It is located at Saskatchewan River Crossing and is open from June to September. Now you have all the information to enjoy this spectacular road trip!
